CRAFT & QUALITY SINCE 1851

Our story begins in 1851 in Denmark with a watermill by the small stream Østeraa on the outskirts of the town of Aalborg. The watermill powered a small textile factory, where fine wool fibres were crafted into woollen clothing and later furniture fabrics.

Even though the company started out small, the ambitions were already big. Innovation, entrepreneurship, and a will to succeed drove the company forward, and across the decades the small textile mill grew into the Gabriel we know today. Along the way, Gabriel survived a devastating fire, two world wars and a shortage of raw materials, but the challenges only made the company stronger and created the dedication and growth mindset that now allow us to celebrate our 170 years anniversary.

Specialists in furniture fabrics
From the first woollen upholstery fabrics in the early 20th century to our high-performance fabrics today, our dedication to quality, aesthetics, and function has remained the same. We are specialists in designing and crafting fabrics that add character and performance to furniture design, and around the world our fabrics are part of people’s lives and enhance everyday experiences – in office spaces, hotel lounges, concert rooms, and airport terminals.

Innovation runs in our veins
The story of Gabriel is also the story of adaptability and innovation. From the industrial to the digital revolution, we have embraced ground-breaking new technologies to help us continuously improve our craft and products. Spanning post-consumer recycled fabrics, sustainable production methods, and innovative knitting and embellishment techniques, we ceaselessly explore and integrate new technologies and materials that allow us to reinvent the world of furniture fabrics.

Caring for nature for 170 years
Sustainability runs deep in our veins and even back in 1851 when the company was established measures were taken to protect the water quality of the stream that ran by the textile mill and provided the factory with waterpower. Almost two centuries later, we are renowned for pioneering the industry with uncompromising sustainability efforts, protecting the environment, and providing long-lasting, sustainable fabric solutions that contribute to safe and healthy indoor spaces.

The art and craft of creating colours
For 170 years, Gabriel has developed the art and craft of creating colours, starting with plant and mineral dyes, moving on to the first revolutionary synthetic dyes, and later pioneering the industry with dyes without heavy metals. Today, colour design has become an integral part of who we are. Our inhouse designers master the art of creating beautiful colours, of mixing and matching shades and tones to compose colour palettes that define furniture and indoor spaces, reflecting the times in which we live.
